Description

This late 19th-century French winegrower’s pitcher features a substantial barrel-shaped form crafted from coopered wood bound with riveted iron hoops. The domed shoulder rises to a short collar with a shaped pouring lip and a forged iron strap handle, all displaying a deep, dark patina. Visible tool marks, oxidized fittings, and age-related shrinkage add to its character. Though no longer watertight, it remains structurally sound and can be used decoratively or with a liner if holding water.Handmade by rural French coopers, such pitchers once served vintners for drawing wine, carrying must, or water during harvest and cellar work. The swelling body and iron banding followed the same principles as barrels, while the forged fittings reflect the utilitarian craftsmanship of 19th-century agricultural France.Today, it makes a charming rustic accent for a kitchen or bar, perfect for displaying dried or fresh arrangements, or pairing with stoneware, bread boards, and demijohns for a quietly pastoral vignette.
