Description
A rare French Belle Époque lemonade jug by Gallia, circa 1900, in engraved crystal and silver-plated metal. The well-balanced urn-shaped body features a clear crystal vessel engraved with delicate laurel bands, rising from a circular silver-plated foot crisply chased with anthemion motifs. The neck is encircled by an acanthus-embossed collar, above which sits a hinged lid surmounted by a finely cast swan finial. The elegant handle is shaped with a gentle curve and terminates in a small rosette thumb rest. The spout is equally refined, with a softly flared lip and subtle pouring notch, designed for a clean, controlled pour. Inside, a fitted glass ice liner allows beverages to be chilled without dilution. The silver plate shows a gentle, timeworn patina, while the crystal displays light surface wear; overall in very good condition and ready for use.
Conceived for serving citron pressé and summer cordials, this form became a favorite of Belle Époque entertaining. Gallia, the innovative line introduced by Christofle around 1900, used a proprietary alloy beneath its silver plating to achieve sculptural yet accessible designs. Set upon a silver tray on a bar cart or dining console, it lends sparkle to aperitif service. Fill with chilled water and citrus for a summer table, or present it as a striking centerpiece that speaks to the enduring prestige of Christofle and Gallia, with the quiet presence of an heirloom passed through generations.
